About the Specialized Library for Medicine

The Specialized Library for Medicine (FBM) is a division of the Central Library. The FBM offers easy access to all library services for students and staff of the University Medical Center.

Services include a reading room with approximately 2,850 volumes and a journal section that includes about 142 current journals and roughly 35,000 journal volumes. All items in the FBM are indexed in the online catalog. In addition to the print collections, users can also access about 3,270 licensed electronic medical journals.

The reading room has 74 workspaces and 20 computer workstations. There is also a group work room with capacity for 20 people. Approximately 10,200 volumes in the textbook collection and about 3,200 volumes from the open shelves can be borrowed. The Central Library's closed stacks' collections can be requested and collected at the FBM. The FBM processes requests submitted as German and international inter-library loans as well as requests placed on OLiVer, the Central Library's online literature provision service. The FBM also participates in the internal inter-library loans service (ILV) for medical libraries.

Thanks to the close cooperation with the University Medical Center, users have access to extensive collections of electronic journals and databases. The FBM places a lot of emphasis on user training (especially PubMed and EndNote courses) and advice, supplemented by extensive information on its website.

There are three photocopiers and a microfiche reading device available and, at 20 computer workstations, users have access to the electronic collection available at the University Library and on the internet. There are also printing, scanning and storage facilities and W-LAN access.
