The Hymnal Archive contains around 8,000 German-language hymns from Christian denominations from the 16th to the 21st century. There are also choral books, anthologies and small works. The works were compiled by the Interdisciplinary Working Group for Hymnal Research, which was merged into theHymn and Hymnal Research Center founded in 2017 at the Faculty of Catholic Theology (part of Faculty 01) in the Department of Liturgical Studies.
The books became part of the collection through antiquarian purchases, copies, films, donations or as long-term loans from private collections. The collection is continuously and selectively expanded.
The Hymnal Archive is accessible as a reference library and is fully indexed through the catalog of the DFG Hymnal Bibliography project. In addition, a song catalog database has been set up, which offers the opportunity to track the distribution history of individual songs, and which is currently being expanded into a hymnological database.
The Hymnal Archive is used for research purposes at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and all over the world.
On the Gutenberg Capture site, 39 originals from the 18th century can be downloaded and two originals from the 16th century can be viewed digitally.
