French Studies

Mainz University has always had strong ties with France. The University Library (UB) contributes to this with its French Studies, which has long been funded as an “outstanding research library.” As a founding member, the UB Mainz, together with the Center for French and Francophone Studies (CFFS), would like to support the diverse French Studies in Mainz.

Collection focus for over 30 years

Since 1991, interdisciplinary literature has been acquired in cultural and social sciences with a focus on France. While the original focus of the collection was on the regions of France, since 2013 the French-speaking world and the European context have been given greater attention. The current broadening of the geographical perspective takes into account the new inter- and transcultural orientation of research in Mainz. Many years of DFG funding also made it possible to retrospectively supplement the collection.

The collection currently comprises almost 100,000 books and numerous specialist journals. A number of full-text databases related to cultural history and e-publications have been acquired. Of course, more general works on France and the French-speaking world complete the spectrum.
