- Jungnickel Collection -
The Study Collection of Egyptology of the Institute of Ancient Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz currently holds around 40 certified, partly large-size plaster casts after colored Ancient Egyptian originals. The reliefs, steles and statuettes, vessels, amulets and small sculptures cover the period from 2.500 until 200 B. C.
The main focus is on the Ancient Empire (grave relief showing poultry farming, statue of a writer), on royal images of the New Empire (Echnaton and Nofretete, Sethos I.) and on animal- or human-shaped idols of the Late Period.
Most of the casts stem from the plaster molding shop of the State Museums of Berlin and were kindly financed by the Friends of Egyptology at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz e.V., particularly through donations from Ulrike Jungnickel.
The purpose of the collection is to introduce students and interested persons to the scientific approach to three-dimensional objects and original hieroglyphic texts.
