- Jungnickel Collection -
The Study Collection of Egyptology of the Institute for Ancient Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz currently holds around 40 certified, partly large-size colored plaster casts molded after Ancient Egyptian originals. The reliefs, stelae and statuettes, vessels, amulets and other small finds date from 2500 until 200 BCE.
The collection focuses on the Old Kingdom (including a tomb relief showing poultry farming, statue of a scribe), on royal imagery from the New Kingdom (such as Akhenaton and Nefertiti, Sethos I) and Late Period statuettes of deities in human or animal form.
Most of the casts were produced in the plaster mold shop of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and were generously funded by the Freundeskreis Ägyptologie an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz e. V., particularly through donations from Ulrike Jungnickel.
The purpose of the collection is to introduce students and interested members of the public to the scientific study of three-dimensional objects and original hieroglyphic texts.
