Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) remains committed to strengthening Open Access. University President Prof. Dr. Georg Krausch signed the science-driven and science-oriented initiative Open Access 2020 on 2 June 2016.

The aim of the declaration is to gradually switch from the subscription-based model of scientific journals to the Open Access model.

The declaration was initiated by the Max Planck Society.
