Central Library: Reading Room 2 Closed for Renovation

22.06.2026

Big changes are underway at the Central Library. Reading Room 2 is currently being transformed into a new Makerspace and will therefore be closed for the coming months. Once completed, the space will offer exciting new opportunities for creative, practical, and collaborative learning.

A Makerspace is a place where learning goes beyond reading and writing and becomes hands-on. Equipped with 3D printers, sewing machines, a laser cutter, hand tools, and more, it will provide the resources needed to turn ideas into reality.
Whether you are developing a project for a course, creating something for a student initiative, or simply interested in learning how to use a 3D printer, the Makerspace will offer a welcoming environment to experiment, design, and build. While the primary focus will be on teaching activities and student projects, there will also be dedicated times when anyone with a library card can use the equipment independently.

This renovation is an important step in making our library even more versatile, innovative, and future-oriented. We believe it will be well worth the wait.
If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the planned Makerspace, please contact Dr Hannah Hartge at h.hartge@ub.uni-mainz.de.

Trial Access to the Music and Sound Studies E-Book Collection

19.05.2026

The JGU community now has trial access to the Music and Sound Studies e-book collection from Duke University Press. The collection comprises 221 DRM-free e-books in the fields of ethnomusicology, sound studies, jazz studies, and popular music studies, as well as biographies, memoirs, and essays. During the trial period through July 2026, titles can be read online and individual chapters downloaded as PDFs.

The collection offers fresh perspectives on music–not only as sound, but also as a cultural, social political, and technological phenomenon. In short, it explores not just what we hear, but how, why, and in what contexts we listen.

1. Click »Sign in«
2. Click »Login via Shibboleth«
3. Enter »Mainz«
4. Select »Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz«
5. If prompted, click »Allow«
6. Log in as usual via the JGU central authentication page

On public computers in our libraries, authentication via Shibboleth is not required.
