Would you like to integrate the principles of Open Science into your research? The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz supports researchers, teachers, and students in implementing Open Science practices. We'll show you how you can make your research more transparent, accessible, and sustainable with our services.
Quick Start
What is Open Science?
Open Science encompasses methods and practices that promote transparency, sustainability, and trust in research while ensuring free access to its results.
What is it all about?
Open Science enhances the quality of research and fosters collaboration and exchange within the research community, while making research accessible to the general public.
How does Open Science achieve this?
Research findings, data, and methods are made available and documented in a way that ensures they are verifiable, reusable, and accessible to different audiences.

First point of contact for questions about Open Science: Open Science Support
Open Access enables free and permanent access to scientific information. We provide advice to all JGU researchers, teachers, and students on publishing, using, and funding Open Access publications.
Our goal is to make Open Access publishing simple, transparent, and practical. Get in touch with us—we are happy to support you at every stage of the publication process.
Our Services:
- Make your publications freely accessible through Gutenberg Open Science, JGU’s Open Access repository
- Get reimbursed for the costs of your Open Access publication
- Publish your student paper in SPORK, JGU’s Open Access journal for students
- Record your research activities in Gutenberg Research Elements
- Publish your own Open Access journal
- Register your ORCID iD for unique author identification
- Publish your student paper in SPORK, JGU’s Open Access journal for students
Publish and use research data under open, clearly defined conditions. From planning to publishing and archiving: we support you in managing your research data and help you meet the requirements of third-party funding providers.
Making research data openly available helps make research transparent, enables results to be verified and replicated, and makes data accessible for further research. To keep research data findable and reusable in the long term, they should follow the FAIR principles, be supported by appropriate metadata and documentation, and have clear terms of use and access.
Our Services:
- Publish your research data in Gutenberg Open Science, JGU’s institutional Open Access repository
- Digitize research data and documents with Gutenberg Capture
- Record your research activities in Gutenberg Research Elements
- Create your Data Management Plan (DMP) using JGU’s RDMO tool
- Check what legal requirements you need to consider when sharing your data
- Learn about the principles that apply to research data management at JGU
- Get practical advice on managing your research data from the team of research data experts
Showcase your teaching with Open Educational Resources and digital tools. We advise and support you in creating OER, addressing licensing questions, and publishing suitable materials.
Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible teaching and learning materials that are openly licensed and can be legally used, adapted, and redistributed. As part of Open Science, they support transparent, sustainable, and collaborative teaching practices. They make it easier to share materials, encourage reuse, and contribute to quality assurance in teaching.
Our Services:
- Create your own learning materials with the Center for Audiovisual Production (ZAP)
- Explore all JGU resources on digital teaching and learning, covering topics such as AI, learning tools, legal issues, data protection, and much more
- Publish your OER materials on OpenEdu-RLP, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate’s platform for Open Educational Resources
- Discover how to create your own Open Educational Resources and engaging videos
Get citizens actively involved in your research to help them experience its relevance, impact, and significance. We introduce you to national and international networking platforms and projects to inspire you in developing your own Citizen Science projects. And we’d be happy to share your project with the public on our website.
Participatory research makes research more transparent by involving people outside the scientific community. This enhances its social acceptance and impact.
Our Services:
- Get involved in the project Hummeln helfen! Rhein-Main, a biology education research and development project in the Rhine-Main region
- Earn our Open Science Certificate in Citizen Science
